February 15th is International Childhood Cancer Awareness Day. According to the National Cancer Institute, an estimated 15,270 children and adolescents ages 0 to 19 will be diagnosed with cancer in 2017 and 1,790 will die of the disease in the U.S. (National Cancer Institute, 2017). For more information on Childhood Cancer, please visit: National Cancer Institute, St. Jude's Children Research Hospital, and/or CureSearch for Children's Cancer.
My family-oriented lifestyle has been a major pillar for me in many ways and is something I try not to take for granted. I have been very fortunate to have a family full of love and support; for the most part we've been blessed with good health. Unfortunately not everyone is as fortunate. I have had family members and close friends diagnosed with cancer as recent as this week. Adults are able to bare this diagnosis by shifting focus on the positive, their families, the memories they share with loved ones. Children on the other hand are so much more innocent, it's difficult to understand what's happening or why their lives are forever changed. The innocence of a child is a beautiful thing, so to see the loss of it is odious. For this reason I donate to St. Jude's; this is my WHY. A show of support, physical or emotional, impacts a child's life more than we may ever be able to fathom. This Childhood Cancer Awareness Day, let's all make a difference! Find out how you may be able to support those affected by Childhood Cancer, visit St. Jude's Way to Give page.
